Remarks by Ambassador Tian Qi at the Handing over Ceremony of the donation of tablets from Huawei to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information of Jamaica

Hon. Fayval Williams, Minister of Education, Youth and Information,

Representative from Huawei and members from the media, ladies and gentlemen,

It’s always a pleasure for me to witness Chinese companies and Chinese communities giving back to Jamaican society. As an outstanding member of Chinese companies operating in Jamaica, Huawei provides not only quality products and services, creates jobs, but also transfers technology and knowledge, trains Jamaican youth, contributes to the social and economic development of Jamaica. The donation of 500 tablets echos the One Laptop or Tablet Per Child initiative launched by the government of Jamaican aiming to help with needy students with the requisite tools to function in the online teaching and learning environment, delivering technology into the hands of the students. This is a good example of technology and education cooperation, as well as the true portrayal of the joint efforts of the two countries to overcome the difficulties due to the pandemic.

Education is the foundation of a country, a nation, and the cornerstone of national rejuvenation and social development. Since 2005, China has been launching human resource cooperation programs to Jamaica, with more than 100 scholarships provided for academic degrees, over USD20 million financial aid for college students and more than 2000 Jamaicans invited to all kinds of short-term workshops. Besides, Chinese teachers have been dispatched to Jamaica to provide Mandarin language courses at Confucius Institute of UWI Mona, Caribbean Maritime University, the Police College and Montego Bay Community College, contributing to language education and culture exchange between the two countries.

The scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation are experiencing in-depth development, making technology and digitalization the future trend of education. More than 2000 years ago, the great Chinese philosopher Confucius proposed the idea of fair education as Teaching without Discrimination or No Social Distinction in Education, which means no child should be left behind for whatever reasons they might be. During this exceptional period of the devastating pandemic, it is extremely important to make sure no child is left behind because of the digital deficit.

Youth are creators of the future, the future of Jamaica as well as the future of China-Jamaica friendship. China stands ready to continuously work with Jamaica to promote exchange and cooperation in areas of science, technology, education, human resource and information, to narrow down the digital divide and education deficit, and strengthen the Strategic Partnership of mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit and common development.

Thank you!
